If you have friends who are animal lovers or travel enthusiasts or curious about Newfoundland and Labrador or seekers of amazing natural spectacles featuring some of the planet's largest gatherings of whales and seabirds we ask you and them to check out the websites of Wildland Tours or Adventure Newfoundland. Explore the photography.

We believe that everybody should experience the whales. Computer games and the video revolution have turned us all away from boyscouts and sports and the great outdoors. People need to see nature if we are going to protect it. I believe everybody should see the whales. Then people will think about them when they consider setting explosions in the ocean or letting commercial fishing take place without adequate supervision.

When governments manage fisheries, the fishers complain about having to work "longer and harder" to meet their quotas. In the nations with little regulation economically desperate fishers will do whatever it takes to make a living; with their effort including net liners and the targetting vulnerable species that should not be caught. The technology unleashed in the ongoing effort to catch our planet's last few fish is unequalled in the history of our world. If you talk to these Captains they will tell you that they will do whatever it takes to keep their families fed. They don't have the luxury to ponder the long term consequences of their actions. Further, their tactics with the few observors that do make it on to these vessels include intimidation, bribery, and forced bribery where young, inexperienced observors are told to accept money or an accident might happen. Hear the tales of Newfoundland.....or simply look at the sunsets. The choice is yours on a Wildland Tour.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, the Oceanic Society, Greenpeace, Project Jonah, Zoocheck, and others have long complained about whales in captivity and how keeping orcas and dolphins in small pens is cruel. Large organizations like Sea World and Marine Land in Ontario plus other marine parks have been the source of some information about the impressive intelligence of whales and dolphins, but they have also been the source of controversy.

An enterprising young killer whale at Marineland and another at Sea World figured out how to use fish as bait to catch seagulls -- and shared their strategy with their fellow whales. Patrons complained that the whales were cruel to the birds. Incidents with trainers being injured or killed have also added to the concern about captive whales. Orcas, false killer whales, pilot whales, and a variety of dolphins are kept in captivity in the United States and Canada . Often they live much shorter lifespans than wild whales and they appear less healthy. Wild orcas have powerful erect dorsal fins while the dorsal fins of captive males flop limply to one side. Belugas, dolphins, and orcas have all experienced unexpected and tragic deaths while being caged in tanks that are tiny in comparison to the free range these animals enjoy in the wild.

Wildland Tours and Atlantic Whales encourages travellers to travel to Newfoundland and Labrador to see and appreciate wild whales. If seeing whales in captivity makes you feel guilty then travel with Wildland Tours. We celebrate, watch, and study whales as they go about their lives in the ocean. Other places like the Antarctic and Baja , California also provide great whale watching but Newfoundland and Labrador also features giant icebergs, puffins, huge seabird colonies, and an amazing landscape with a wonderful and authentic sense of place. For whales and fun visit Newfoundland and Labrador with Wildland Tours. Our Whale Study Week features the planet’s largest gathering of humpbacks. Our Northern Whale Study vacation is an expedition to study orcas and other whale species.

In 2008 our Polar Bear Expedition hopes to encounter Northern Bottlenose Whales.
